I had the privilege of seeing these lovely ladies play on Wednesday at the Hub in Sacramento and I will be seeing them again in Pomona on Sunday (Happy Birthday Gabe!).

If you don't already know, Wild Flag is Mary Timony of Helium, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney, and Rebecca Cole of the Minders.

I'm not going to critique them much since I know they haven't played in front of a live audience until now. I will say the chemistry is great and I loved the tunes. The songs are what I had hoped for, some very Timony-esque numbers, some very Brownstein-esque creations and a few that had a beautiful blend of both worlds.

Continued...

The show in Pomona on 11/21/10 had a ton of energy, albeit lots of sound issues. Mary was much more animated for this set than the Sacto show. Aladdin Jr. reminded me of Luigi's, but with better acoustics. The highlight of the evening was the extended psychedelic version of Glass Tambourine. I wish we had recorded it.

The Pomona crowd was able to lure the ladies into an encore, which is something the Hub attendees need to work on. The encore set consisted of a Velvet Underground and a Patti Smith cover.

I was able to catch Mary after the show and get permission to post a couple of the songs Gabe recorded from the show on 11/17/10.

Enjoy!

KDVS Presents ORMF X 10/2/10 at Plainfield Station Woodland, CA

It's been a little more than a week since ORMF ended. I've been waiting to post because I wanted to see if anyone else posted pictures for the bands I was unable to shoot due to a malfunction with my camera's SD card. I haven't had any luck. I guess something is better than nothing. I was only able to get the first 5 bands that played.

The amazing line up:

Aids Wolf
Big Black Cloud
Mattress
Greg Ashley
Wounded Lion
Ganglians
Super Wild Horses
Dreamdate
Young Prisms
Buk Buk Big Ups

I saw this band play last night and they really rocked my world. I bought their CD immediately afterward. The live set was a raw, garage punk sound. The record Seafaring Pyramids is more jangly, surfy, but still rock and roll. You can check out their myspace page here.

Happy Birthday w/ Residual Echoes 7/21/10 The Hub Sacramento

Happy Birthday

Residual Echoes

I'm a bit late posting these pictures. Sorry...

This show was fantastic! Residual Echoes are quite talented, with layers of sound that makes it seem as though more people should be in the band. My husband says they remind him a bit of Dinosaur Jr.

Happy Birthday were full of energy, despite Kyle's waning voice (laryngitis?) He was such a good sport when we begged him to play "Zit" at the end of their set. If you know this song, it's not something you should sing when you're on the edge of losing your voice. We all sang along, and some of the dudes raged so hard I thought they'd hurt themselves!

It was a great time. If you have a chance to see either one of these bands, I highly recommend it.

Jay Howell is Rad

San Francisco based artist Jay Howell has done a lot of cool shit. I have been a fan of his artwork for a while, but never knew about anything else outside of his drawings. When I started to do some research, I found out this guy likes boobs, pizza, beer and he lived in Sacramento for a while (awesome!).

In all seriousness, he’s an eclectic guy. He has a web only animated variety show called Forest City Rockers Motorcycle Club which has featured music and live clips from Mayyors, Thee Oh Sees, and Crash Normal (some of my favorite bands!). He’s done several zines, which include Punks Git Cut and Sanji & Craig. Jay runs an art and recording project with Mark Kaiser called Mt. St. Mtn. that specializes in limited vinyl runs of exclusive material from the artists, and all packaging and artwork is done by them. He also works with a clothing company called Lifetime Collective.

Jay has been working on character development for an animated series called Bob’s Burgers by Loren Bouchard (Dr. Katz, Adult Swim’s Home Movies). It has been picked up by Fox for 13 episodes and will air during Sunday’s “Animation Domination” lineup. Another exciting project to add to his list of achievements!

Mr. Howell is one busy dude, and it’s great. The more he contributes to the art and music scene, the happier we all will be. If you can, you should check out his exhibit Alligator Fuck House at the A440 Gallery in San Francisco. He’s also featured in the June 2010 issue of Juxtapoz magazine.
